What a Way to Start the Year - Needed Ur Bed, Poppyshow

As we all know, this group of dudes are very close to me and my heart, and I’m so happy to announce to everyone their single “Needed Ur Bed”!

This tune is the first of a 5-track EP that's gonna be rolling out soon, which tells the story of the first 2 years of this group of hooligans.

Poppyshow are what I like to call "new-age chillis," and they instantly confirmed that vibe with this new song. It has over 15,000 streams already and it hasn't even been a month, and what's not to like?

As for this single, it was originally written in 2021 by frontman Jacob Horton in a tiny uni studio. He tells me “I wrote it when I was at the academy after my final year of uni - I was just such a broken person” - I think that message comes across wholeheartedly with such no-nonsense lyrics like “kill off my happiness” pretty much straight outta the gate.

Now on to the arrangement, which I think is my favourite part of the whole tune. Starting the whole thing off, Jacob’s vocal lines are perfectly suited to his range - something a lot of singers find hard to write these days. I also love all the added backing in certain places - it adds another layer to this musical trifle without being too stodgy. Bassist Greg Kerti sounds like he’s having an absolute ball in those verses, and Jacob in that BRIDGE! That motif really scratches an itch for me.

These boys are doing so well with not only their music, but their new rehearsal space that they opened in September, Stiff Crowd HQ. Located in Exeter under the Iron Bridge, it's a lovely little cave for musicians to rehearse, record, and just hang out.
